Beschreibung Since 2015 Jarosław Kaczyński’s Law and Justice (PiS) is pursuing reconstruction of the state in Poland and realising its vision of a society based on traditional values. The controlled ‘conservative’ revolution aims at the reorganisation of the government and its branches and radical change of elites. The switch in Polish politics has shocked European political leadership and commenters – as Victor Orban’s Hungary Poland seems to direct itself towards ‘non-liberal democracy’, what is surprising in a context of country’s image as a role model of post-authoritarian transformations. Is it just another case of rising populism in European societies?

The presentation explains ‘an anatomy’ of Kaczyński’s organisation and discusses Law and Justice in the wider context of Polish politics. It describes the development of the party, failed governance in 2005–2007 and deep reconstruction after the 2010 Polish Air Force Tu-154 Crash in Smolensk as crucial stages in its long road to right-wing governments of Beata Szydło and Mateusz Morawiecki. Moreover, it presents the evolution of Kaczyński’s ideology and vision of Poland as a slow drift from republicanism to nationalism and from Christian conservatism to national-Catholic populism. Its objective is to inspire participants to assess Law and Justice’s ‘conservative’ revolution and its possible future impact on Central European politics, economy and security.
