Andreas Fuchs is new Professor of Development Economics

Prof. Dr. Andreas Fuchs has been the new Professor of Development Economics in Göttingen since 1 September 2019. Before moving to Göttingen, he held the Chair of Environmental, Climate and Development Economics at the Helmut Schmidt University/University of the Federal Armed Forces Hamburg.

The Chair of Development Economics, headed by Prof. Fuchs, investigates issues relevant to development policy from a political-economic perspective. The research focuses on international trade, investment and development policy with a special focus on China and other emerging economies (BRICS). In addition, the professorship deals with the political economy of natural disasters, conflicts, migration and international organizations. The professorship works with statistical-econometric methods and georeferenced data.

In teaching, lectures and seminars on the fundamentals of development economics, especially from a macro-perspective, as well as specialization courses on international development policy and China's development in the economics bachelor's and master's programme are offered. The professorship is also involved in the macroeconomics lectures in the bachelor's programme.

Prof. Fuchs studied economics at the Universities of Bamberg, Paris-Nanterre, Frankfurt and Paris-Dauphine from 2002 to 2008. He then worked as a research assistant at the chair of Prof. Dr. Axel Dreher in Göttingen and Heidelberg. In 2012, he received his doctorate at the Georg-August-Universität with a thesis on the political determinants of foreign aid and international trade in emerging markets.

After completing his doctorate, Prof. Fuchs worked as a postdoc at the Woodrow Wilson School of Public and International Affairs at Princeton University in the USA. In 2013 he moved to the Research Center for Distribution Conflicts and Globalization and the Alfred Weber Institute for Economics at the Ruprecht-Karls-Universität Heidelberg. During this time, the database "AidData's Chinese Official Finance to Africa Dataset", which he co-developed, was published and makes systematic information on China's development projects in Africa available to the public.

Prof. Fuchs is an associate member of the AidData programme of the College of William and Mary in Williamsburg, Virginia, USA; of the European Development Network (EUDN) as well as of the Committee on Economic Systems and Institutional Economics and the Development Economic Committee of the Association for Social Policy. He has also worked as a consultant for the Bertelsmann Foundation, the European Commission and the OECD. His work has been published in leading international journals (e.g. Journal oft he European Economic Association, Journal of Development Economics and Journal of International Economics) and discussed in internationally renowned media (e.g. FAZ, Financial Times, Spiegel, The Economist and Washington Post).
