Gaining a PhD at the English Department

STUDIUM_Info

The English Department does not offer any PhD study programmes on its own. Students who wish to gain a doctoral degree in English Studies - or in one of its subfields – will be enrolled in the PhD study programme of the Faculty of Arts (external).

For this the following steps are necessary (overview, external):

  • Find a supervisor for your topic. Faculty staff - more precisely, the university professors - are eligible for supervision. Information about their individual foci of research can be found on the staff websites of each division (overview).
  • Apply for admission to the PhD Committee (contact: Frau Köhler).
  • After being accepted by the PhD Committee, enrol as a PhD student through the Students' Office, or International Students' Office, of the University of Göttingen.
  • You also have to contact the Graduate School of Humanities Göttingen (GSGG, external) and become a member.
  • Then write your PhD thesis. Note that the doctoral degree has to be completed within six years.

Further information about the PhD study programme and its procedure is available on the website of the Faculty of Humanities (external).
