Dr. Lars Klein


Dr. Lars Klein is Senior Lecturer and Course Coordinator (Studiengangskoordinator) of the EM Joint Master Degree "Euroculture - Society, Politics and Culture in a Global Context". He has been with Euroculture since 2008.

He studied North American Studies - with majors in History and Literature - and Philosophy at Freie Universität Berlin and Uni Basel. He holds a PhD in Modern and Contemporary History from Georg-August-Universität Göttingen.

Prior to joining Euroculture, Lars Klein has been a scholarship-holder in the DFG-research training group "Generation History. Generational Dynamics and Historical Change in 19th and 20th Century", Georg-August-Universität Göttingen (2005-2008) and research associate in the project "The History of War Reporting in the 20th Century" at TU Braunschweig (2003-2005). It was led by Prof. Dr. Ute Daniel and funded by the German Foundation for Peace Research (DSF). He also was project consultant for "Diversity and Restraint. European Perspectives of Power, Culture and Peace", a project funded by the Berghof Research Center in Berlin and led by Prof. Dr. Ekkehart Krippendorff. Lars Klein has held teaching assingments in the Departments of History and Politcs at John-F.-Kennedy-Institute, Freie Universität Berlin, where he also worked as research assistant of Prof. Dr. Knud Krakau. He also held lectureship positions at the University of Strasbourg.

His research foci lie in the fields of "European Studies", "Identity - Belonging - Citizenship", "War, War Reporting and Foreign Policy" and "Generation Studies" (more under "Publications").

As part of research stays and visiting lectureships Lars Klein has spent a term at the BMW Center for German and European Studies at Georgetown University (DFG funded). He has also been visiting scholar at Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis and Osaka University (Erasmus Mundus visiting scholarships), Savitribai Phule Pune University (multiple stays with EM and other funds), Rijksuniversiteit Groningen (DAAD U4-Long Term Stay), Uppsala Universitet (DAAD U4-Research Stay) and Monash University (invited stay). He furthermore regularly teaches at the European Euroculture universities with the help of Erasmus+ mobilities.

Lars Klein has been founding board-member of the "Center for Global Migration Studies" at the University of Göttingen. From 2015-2022, he was Cluster Coordinator "Social Sciences, Economics and Law" of U4 / U4Society. As co-applicant or key staff member he has been involved with projects funded by DFG, DAAD, MWK Lower Saxony, Jean Monnet, Erasmus Mundus, U4 and ENLIGHT. He has been first supervisor of some 150 MA theses (a selection of theses is listed under "Thesis Supervision"). He has organized a range of conferences, lecture series, workshops and panels (a selection to be found in the "Academia"-section of the website) and himself been giving talks in 16 countries.

His regular teaching modules include "Introduction to Euroculture", "Cultural Construction of Social Order", "Europe in a Global Context", "Methodology Seminar and IP Preparation", "ResearchLAB: Imagining Europe Differently", "Master Thesis Seminar".
