W3 Professorship in Environmental Geosciences

Institution: Faculty of Geoscience an Geography, Geoscience Center
Date of Announcement (dd.mm.yyyy): 02.05.2024
Application Deadline (dd.mm.yyyy): 30.06.2024

The Faculty of Geoscience and Geography at the University of Göttingen invites applications for a permanent professorship with civil servant status (grade W3 NBesO) at the Geoscience Center at the earliest possible date:

W3 Professorship in Environmental Geosciences (f/m/d)

The successful candidate will represent the field of environmental geosciences in research and teaching across a wide range of subjects and will work on fundamental environmental issues at the interface between humans, natural resources and ecosystems from a geoscientific perspective. Primarily (hydro)geological and (bio)geochemical principles and methods should be applied to the analysis and solution of environmental problems. The professorship focuses on geoscientific problems that are caused by anthropogenic influences at the interface of the lithosphere, hydrosphere and biosphere and are of direct and current social relevance in view of climate change, environmental changes and resource scarcity. This professorship creates a robust basis for applied research, strengthens the research and teaching focus in the area of human-environment-geo-resource interaction and forms a mainstay in the new faculty focus “Georesources and Sustainability”.

We are looking for an internationally visible, innovative, communicative and team-oriented personality that works across disciplines, actively seeks cooperation and contributes to professional networking within and outside the faculty.

The successful candidate will contribute to the fundamental understanding of complex processes and their validation in concrete environment- and application-related case studies. His or her research focus is the anthropogenically-influenced geological subsurface in terrestrial settings, which may include limnic, fluvial, and coastal systems. The handling of large datasets, numerical modelling, excellent laboratory analytics or field investigations and experiments are part of the candidate’s expertise and research projects. Our faculty provides excellent analytical equipment, a wide range of modern geoscientific and geographical research directions with numerous opportunities for cooperation, as well as collegial, open and pleasant working atmosphere.

Requirements for the position are the ability to provide excellent teaching, outstanding internationally visible publication activity, proven successful acquisition of third-party funds and a habilitation or a qualification equivalent to a habilitation. The faculty considers equality and diversity to be important, and the successful candidate is expected to uphold and support this philosophy.

Appointment requirements are stipulated by Article 25 of the Lower Saxony Higher Education Act in the most current version of that law. As a rule, junior professors and other members of the University of Göttingen that have obtained their doctorate from this university can only be considered for a professorial appointment if after the completion of the doctoral thesis they have transferred to another university or worked for a minimum of two years in research elsewhere. The University of Göttingen is a Public Law Foundation and thereby entitled to award professorships. Details will be provided upon request.

Applications from abroad are explicitly welcome. The University of Göttingen strives to increase the proportion of women in areas where women are underrepresented and therefore explicitly invites qualified female scholars to apply. The University has committed itself to being a family-friendly institution and supports its employees in balancing work and family life. The University is particularly committed to the professional participation of disabled employees and therefore welcomes applications from persons with disabilities. In the case of equivalent qualifications, applications from disabled persons will be given preference. In order for the University to be able to protect the interests of the applicant, information about a disability or equal status should be included in the application.

Applications with the usual documents (curriculum vitae, certificates, list of publications, teaching experience (including teaching evaluations), research plan and overview of third-party funds obtained) are requested in electronic form (as a single PDF file) by June 30, 2024 to the Dean of the Faculty of Geoscience and Geography of the University of Göttingen (Prof. Dr. Christoph Dittrich, dekanat@geo.uni-goettingen.de).

If you have further questions, please contact Prof. Dr. Volker Thiel (vthiel@gwdg.de).
