Examination Regulations for the Consecutive Master's Degree Programme in Intercultural Theology at the Georg August University Gttingen 1 Scope 1 The General Examination Regulations for the Bachelors and Masters Degree Programmes as well as Other Academic Programmes at the University of Gttingen (APO)" (Allgemeine Prfungsordnung fr Bachelor- und Master-Studiengnge sowie sonstige Studienangebote an der Universitt Gttingen (APO)) in the current version apply to the Master's degree programme in Intercultural Theology. 2 These examination regulations contain additional regulations which relate in particular to the subject and degree programme. 2 Objectives, Purpose of the Examination (1) Studies in Intercultural Theology with the degree of Master of Arts (MA) prepare graduates for work in missionary and ecumenical institutions, and in churches in Germany and partner churches abroad, and also for work in Christian world alliances, non-governmental organisations, media, educational institutions (adult education) and academic institutions. (2) 1 In the Master's degree programme, the students should gain deeper academic knowledge of theology in an intercultural context, and the ability to carry out independent subject-specific, interdisciplinary academic research and to apply academic knowledge in areas of intercultural exchange in theology, ecumenism and mission fields. 2 By means of career-relevant teaching of specialist knowledge and methodological and analytical skills, the programme qualifies graduates for work in the above-mentioned areas and forms the basis for further studies in doctoral programmes. (3) The examinations taken in the course of the Master's degree programme determine whether examinees have acquired the necessary knowledge and skills required to satisfy the study objectives, are able to see subject-relevant connections and relationships and possess the ability to work according to scholarly principles, to impart academic knowledge and to reflect on and evaluate the acquired knowledge with regard to application contexts. 3 University Degree After passing the Masters examination, the university confers the university degree of Master of Arts", abbreviated as "MA ". 4 Programme Structure and Standard Duration of Studies (1) The programme begins in the winter semester. (2) The standard duration of study is 4 semesters. (3) The programme comprises 120 credits (ECTS credits, abbreviated: C), which are distributed as follows: a. coursework 88 C b. b. professional training (key skills) 12 C c. Masters thesis 20 C (4) 1 Coursework and examinations are to be accomplished in compulsory, elective and optional modules. 2 These are laid down in the module overview (Appendix I). 3 Further information on the course of studies is given in the study regulations. The module directory and handbook will be published separately in a common electronic format (digital module directory); they are part of these Regulations in as far as the modules are listed in the module overview (Appendix I). (5) All the teaching and the examinations in the Master's degree programme in Intercultural Theology are in English. (6) The Master's degree programme is not suitable for part-time study. 5 Registration and Admission to Module Examinations (1) 1 Registration for oral and written examinations is carried out electronically in the form and for the deadlines stipulated by the examination committee. 2 Withdrawal without giving cause (cancellation) is possible within the time period stipulated by the examination committee. 3 Where withdrawal or default is due to illness or other important reasons, the examination committee must be notified in writing immediately and credible grounds given. 4 The examination committee rules on the existence of important reasons. ((2) 1 Students must register for examinations in taught courses when teaching begins. 2 Withdrawal from assignments is possible up to the assignment deadline; withdrawal from presentations, papers and other talks is possible up to two weeks before the date of the presentation. 3 Where withdrawal or default is due to illness or other important reasons, the examination committee must be notified in writing immediately and credible grounds given. 4 The examination committee rules on the existence of important reasons. (3) Substantiated cases which require regulation other than that in paragraphs 1 and 2 are to be regulated in consultation with the chair of the examination committee. (4) 1 If compulsory attendance is stipulated in the module handbook as a requirement for admission to the module examination, two unexcused absences are regarded as irrelevant. 2 Any further violation of compulsory attendance must be excused by a medical certificate. 6 Admission to the Masters Thesis (1) As prerequisite for admission to the Masters thesis modules totalling 72 C must be passed. (2) 1 The application for admission to the Master's thesis is to be submitted in writing to the appropriate examiners. 2 The following documents must be attached: a. Evidence of compliance with the prerequisites given under paragraph 1 b. A proposal of a topic for the Masters thesis c.c. Suggestions for the principal and secondary supervisors d. Written confirmation from the principal and secondary supervisor and e. A statement that the Masters examination in the same or a similar Master's degree programme at a university in Germany or abroad is not a definite failure or deemed a definite failure. 3 The proposal and suggestions in items b. and c. and the confirmation in item d. are unnecessary if the student affirms that he/she is unable to find a supervisor. 4 In this case, the responsible examination committee appoints the supervisors and determines the topic of the thesis. 5 The candidate is consulted on the choice of topic. 6 The right of first proposal of the topic does not constitute a legal right. (3) 1 The examination committee rules on admission. 2 This is to be refused if the admission prerequisites are not fulfilled or if the Master's degree examination in the same or a similar Master's degree programme at a university in Germany or abroad is a definite failure or deemed a definite failure. 7 Master's Thesis (1) 1 By means of the written thesis, the candidate should demonstrate that, within a fixed period of time and using the methods of his or her specialised subject, he or she is able to work on a problem to develop an own academically-substantiated assessment, to make academically-sound statements, and to present results in the appropriate manner with regard to language and form. 2 20 C will be awarded to a successful Masters thesis. (2) 1 The provisional topic of the Masters thesis is to be agreed upon with the proposed primary supervisor, confirmed by the proposed secondary supervisor and submitted to the responsible examination committee. 2 The examination committee will issue the topic of the Masters thesis in accordance with the rules of procedure. 3 The date of issue is to be recorded. (3) 1 The processing time given to complete the thesis is 20 weeks. 2 At the request of the candidate, the responsible examination committee can extend this period by six weeks for reasons for which the candidate is not responsible and in agreement with the supervisor. 3 As a rule the cause is illness, which is to be reported without delay and certified by a medical certificate. 4 If the deadlines have been passed without good cause as given in paragraph 2, then the Master's thesis will be graded "not sufficient "(5.0); if there is good cause in accordance with clause 2, then a new topic will be issued in the case where the maximum extension period has expired. (5) 1 The topic can only be given back once and only within the first 4 weeks of the processing time period. 2 A new theme is to be agreed upon immediately, or, at the latest, within a time period of 4 weeks. 3 Where the Masters thesis has to be repeated, then the return of the topic in accordance with paragraph 1 is only permitted if the person to be examined has not exercised this option in the first examination attempt. (6) The Masters thesis is written in English. (7) 1 Two copies of the Masters thesis are submitted to the responsible examination office. 2 The date of submission is to be recorded. 3 On submission, the candidate must give written assurance that he or she is the sole author of the thesis and has used no other sources or aids other than those indicated. (8) 1 The responsible examination committee passes the thesis on to the primary supervisor for review. 2 At the same time, they appoint another reviewer, who is to be selected from the group of authorised examiners. 3 The candidate has a right to be heard before appointments are made. 4 Each reviewer assigns a grade. (9) The duration of the evaluation process should not exceed 4 weeks. (10) 1 The Masters thesis can be produced as a collaborative work. 2 The contribution of the candidate who is to be examined, must be clearly differentiable by indicating the sections, pages or other objective criteria and must meet the requirements in accordance to para. 1. 8 Repeatability of Examination in order to Improve Grades It is not permitted to repeat examinations which have been passed in order to improve the grade, the provision in 16a para. 3 cl. 2 of the General Examination Regulations (APO) is not affected. 9 Examination Committees (1) 1 The examination committee consists of five members, appointed by the representatives of each group in the faculty board; three members of the group of university teachers, a member of staff and a member of the student body. 2 In addition, a deputy is to be appointed from each group. (2) The examination committee elects a chair and a deputy from the group of university teachers. 10 Final Grade and Definite Failure (1) The examination for the Masters degree is passed when at least 120 C have been earned and all necessary module examinations and the thesis have been passed. (2) 1 The right to examination is definitely extinguished, if, in this course or an equivalent Master's degree programme at a university in Germany and abroad a. a compulsory module was a definite failure or deemed a definite failure, b. elective or optional modules can no longer be passed to the extent which is required or c. c. the second attempt at the Master's thesis is a failure or deemed a failure. 2 In this case, the examination for the Masters degree is deemed a definite failure. (3) Notification of definite failure of the Master's degree examination will be given, which will include a statement on legal remedies. (4) The overall result, "with distinction" is awarded if the thesis receives grade 1.0 with an average grade of the other coursework of at least 1.7. 11 Taking Effect These regulations take effect on the day following their publication in the Bulletin of the University of Gttingen.
