• Encouragement for PhD students to identify, formulate and implement their own training and networking needs
  • Provision of previously non-existent topics in the qualification program for PhD students, with a special focus on reflection on methods
  • Strengthening good scientific practice through sound methodological knowledge and scientific exchange
  • The funding of a course that helps you to learn or deepen a method or a working technique based on your research questions. This can be designed as an exchange within a peer group or as a workshop with an external trainer.
    or
  • The establishment of a doctoral students' forum on your topics, if you wish to have a longer-term, interdisciplinary framework for your discussion of doctoral projects or questions of your academic career.
    or
  • c) Other forms of self-designed academic qualification and networking.
  • On request, support in networking with other PhD students in order to put together a group that is as productive as possible,
  • Financial support of trainers for your course or guest speakers for your doctoral forum (e.g. fees, accommodation and travel costs),
  • Administration of the registration of participants,
  • Relief from bureaucratic effort through implementation of budget rules and accounting by the office,
  • If necessary, certification of the course with ECTS in consultation with the faculties, if this complies with the rules for awarding ECTS.
  • PhD members of the GGG can apply (also with cooperation partners such as PhD students from other faculties).
  • You can apply at any time and will receive the answer after the next board meeting of the GGG. The board decides four times a year about the admission to this funding format (usually in the second and in the second last week of the lecture period).
  • The GGG office will be happy to advise you before you submit your application so that a positive decision can be made about your funding if possible.
  • This funding is being tested for the first time in the winter semester 2021/22 and the GGG would like to give doctoral candidates as much freedom as possible to develop their ideas. Therefore, there are no recommendations for the maximum funding limit so far.
  • Approximately 5,000 Euros are available for all applications within one year, which will be divided among the promising projects. In case of many inspiring requests, this amount can be increased by the board.
  • The application is informal, unbureaucratic and at your own discretion. Depending on your request, you have the freedom to describe your bottom-up project in a way that suits you and is meaningful to the GGG Board.
The following list provides guidance, but you need not be constrained by it:
  • always include: Name, institute, faculty and email address of one or more PhD students submitting the proposal.
  • Description of the topic and the desired form of the course or forum (e.g.: What methods are to be discussed? What expertise is available and what, if any, should be brought in from outside? How will the project benefit your doctoral or academic career prospects)?
  • planned schedule and rotation of the course or forum
  • planned number of participants and disciplines (incl. faculty) as well as list of already known expected participants (name, institute and faculty)
  • Indication whether the event is a closed one (only the participants they already have in mind or admit) or whether other doctoral students can join (as part of the GGG program)
  • List of services and financial support requested by the GGG (e.g. calculation of costs of external lecturers)
  • Information on how your project meets the funding requirements and, if applicable, part of the evaluation criteria
  • Self-designed projects according to your ideas and needs for qualification and networking among PhD students are funded. The framework is deliberately broad and unbureaucratic.
The more of these characteristics apply to your project, the greater your chance of receiving funding:
    a) Funding requirements:
  • The applicants are enrolled doctoral students at the Faculty of Law, Social Sciences or Economics at the University of Göttingen.
  • The majority of the intended participants are doctoral students
  • There are two binding contact persons who set up and coordinate the project and act as contact persons with the GGG.
  • The topic is scientifically relevant (in the sense of content, methods or skills that are useful for the PhD or for professional competencies).
  • A statement of the qualifications of any desired external trainer or lecturer is included.
  • The topic, format and cost plan are comprehensible.
    b) supplementary evaluation criteria that increase the chances of funding:
  • The topic, format and cost plan are concrete.
  • You have already talked about it with other PhD students and have gathered a number of interested participants..
  • Interdisciplinary formation of the participants: the doctoral candidates are at different chairs or faculties
  • International formation of the participants, if necessary multilingualism.
  • Comprehensible diversity and equality-oriented measures in the planning of events and formation of the group are presented.
  • Comprehensible measures for accessibility are presented
  • Fees for employees of the University of Göttingen
  • Courses that are already sufficiently offered at the university
  • Measures for an already existing group or circle of doctoral students
  • Measures that are funded anyway (e.g. in your faculty or if you are a member of a Research Training Group (GRK/RTG) or similar).
