Details

The M.A. in Iranian and Persianate Studies is a consecutive degree program that builds on the respective bachelor's programs and provides deeper knowledge of the history, society, language and culture of the countries and regions of the Persianate world and Iran.

The M.A. in Iranian and Persianate Studies in Göttingen takes the entire area influenced by the Persian language and Iranian culture into account. Besides Iran this includes the Caucasus, Uzbekistan, Tajikistan, Afghanistan, Pakistan and India. A specific focus of the program in Göttingen is the study of Indo-Persian culture. In collaboration with the Eastern European History program, we also offer Interdisciplinary courses on Central Asia and the Caucasus. Our excursions to Iran, Uzbekistan, Georgia or India are another special feature.

The study program also includes courses to advance your occupational and practice-oriented language skills, particularly in the field Technical Language and Didactics of Persian as a Foreign Language. Furthermore, it is possible to integrate internships and language courses in your studies, or spend a semester abroad.

The M.A. degree in Iranian and Persianate Studies qualifies graduates for an academic career, for occupations in research and cultural institutions, in adult education, with international organizations, in intercultural advisory work, in tourism, as translators or in social work and migration assistance. - It is important to us to inform students about possible occupations in good time. That is why we arrange an annual Career Information Day, where representatives of different organizations and professions give an account of their career and work. By talking to them students gain information about suitable career planning and useful additional qualifications.

This degree programme can be studied in 3 different profiles:

  • Single Honours MA totalling 78 credits (mono-master)
  • Joint Honours MA totalling 42 credits in combination with one module package (minor) totalling 36 credits
  • Joint Honours MA totalling 42 credits in combination with two module packages (minors) totalling 18 credits each

Application

Single/Joint Honours MA

Iranian and Persianate Studies can be studied as a Single Honours MA (78 credits) or as a Joint Honours MA totalling 42 credits in combination with one or two external module packages (36/18 credits).

Previous studies

  • B.A.-Degree or equivalent degree
  • Eligibility: Achievements amounting to 50 credits from Iranian Studies, including achievements in at least two of the following areas: History, Law, Politics, Sociology, Anthropology/Ethnology, Archeology and Art History, Literary Studies, Media Studies of Iran and the Islamic World, Religious Studies (not Theology), Islamic Philosophy, Linguistics, Translation Studies (e.g. Persian-English, Persian-German, Sanskrit-Persian, Arabic-Persian), or Didactics of the Persian Language. Academic achievements on the field of translation studies (the mentioned language combinations) can be considered with a maximum of 18 Credits..

Language requirements

  • Applicants who are not native speakers of Persian must have sufficient knowledge of the language. Achievements in Persian totalling 36 C are proof of sufficient language skills; instead of proof by means of credits, the required language skills may also be demonstrated by successful participation in the language aptitude test offered by Georg August University.
  • proof of sufficient English language proficiency at C1 level by minimum performance in an internationally recognized test .

Module package

Iranian and Persianate Studies can also be studied as a module package of 36 or 18 credits in combination with a Master's programme (Joint Honours MA).

Admission requirements for the module package of 36 credits

  • B.A.-Degree or equivalent degree
  • Eligibility: achievements in Iranian and Persianate studies totalling at least 30 credit points.
  • Applicants who are not native speakers of Persian must have sufficient knowledge of the language. Achievements in Persian totalling 18 C are proof of sufficient language skills; instead of proof by means of credits, the required language skills may also be demonstrated by successful participation in the language aptitude test offered by Georg August University.
  • proof of sufficient English language proficiency at C1 level by minimum performance in an internationally recognized test .

Admission requirements for the module package of 18 credits

  • The module package of 18 credits is taught in German.
  • Proof of sufficient German language skills is required.
