Programme description
The two-subject Bachelor's programme in Computer Science provides students with scientific fundamentals and methods in the subject of Computer Science combined with another subject area.
Due to the diversity of subject combinations, this creates the possibility in particular to combine computer science with a subject from Humanities and Social Sciences. This makes particular sense because the impact of information technology on society could not be greater. How do you make the public aware of the issue of data protection on the Internet? What are the ethical consequences of research in artificial intelligence? How does one safeguard the fundamental rights of citizens in times of NSA revelations?
Due to its interdisciplinary character, the two-subject Bachelor of Computer Science offers a basis for an interdisciplinary discussion on these important questions. But it is not only the impact of computer science on society that is of interest - the possibilities of information technology applications in the humanities and social sciences, such as text analysis, also offer new research potential.
Programme structure
The 2-subject Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) Computer Science plus X is an independent degree programme in which 180 ECTS credits (6 semesters) must be successfully completed. In addition to the subject Computer Science, another subject has to be chosen, which is studied to the same extent. The programme includes the three areas of study: Subject Science, Area of professionalization and the Bachelor's Thesis.
In the area of subject science, an additional subject can be chosen in addition to the subject of computer science, which is studied on an equal footing with 66 ETCS per subject. In doing so, students learn basic knowledge from the field of computer science as well as their second subject.
In the area of professionalization, students have the opportunity to choose a study profile in order to profile themselves according to individual and subject-specific inclinations and career aspirations and to acquire fundamental key competencies for further studies or professional practice. In the professionalization area, one of the following study profiles can be selected:
- Scientific Profile
- Job-related profile
- Education related profile
- Profil "studium generale"
The study profiles differ in the selection of module packages
Scientific Profile
In the Scientific Profile, a module package from computer science or the second subject can be chosen, as well as freely selectable modules from the permitted range.
Job-related profile
In the occupational field-related profile, a module package related to the field of occupation must be selected, as well as freely selectable modules from the permissible range.
Education related profile
In the education related profile, subject didactic, educational science modules and key competencies must be selected accordingly. Further information on the computer science teacher training programme can be found herer.
Profil "studium generale"
In the profile "studium generale"any freely selectable modules can be chosen from the permissible offer.
Depending on the intended master's degree programme, the profile should be chosen thoughtfully
After successful completion of all modules of the specialized studies as well as the mandatory modules of the professionalization area, students can write the bachelor thesis in the subject of computer science or in their second subject to complete the bachelor studies.
The second subject
When choosing a second subject, you should consider which professional field the chosen combination is useful for and which Master's degree programs can be based on it.
Digital Humanities
If you are interested in the field of "Digital Humanities" (DH), the 2-subject Bachelor "Computer Science plus Humanities/Social Sciences" is the right choice.
This combination of subjects provides a foundation for the application of computer-based methods and for the systematic use of digital resources in the humanities and social sciences. Currently, DH in Göttingen focuses on the research areas of archaeology and text (linguistics and literary studies).
Successful study of the 2-subject bachelor's degree "Computer Science plus Humanities/Social Sciences" in the scientific profile enables further study in the degree programme Applied Computer Science (M.Sc.), in which the specialization "Digital Humanities" can be selected. However, it must be noted that sufficient credits in computer science have to be earned in the Bachelor's degree programme to fulfil the admission requirements.
Admission requirements
Entry requirements
An indispensable prerequisite for starting a course of studies is always documentary evidence of university entrance qualification (in German "Hochschulzugangsberechtigung", or HZB). This qualification can be acquired in various ways either at school or through gainful employment.

Prior knowledge
Anyone who wants to study the 2-subject Bachelor of Computer Science plus X does not have to be a math genius or a computer freak. All that is needed is a basic interest in mathematical-logical thinking and practical working methods.
The ability to work in a team is an important prerequisite for later professional life. Specialized knowledge, especially in programming, is not required. Furthermore, an interest in the second subject is of course important.
