BENWOOD
Short rotation forestry as a sustainable and eco-efficient land use management system for fossil fuels substitution within CDM-projects
Das EU-Forschungsvorhaben BENWOOD startete am 01. April 2009 und wurde am 30. September 2011 erfolgreich abgeschlossen.
Mit Hilfe des Projekts wurde der Wissensaustausch zwischen Wissenschaft und Projektentwicklern im Bereich der Kurzumtriebswirtschaft (Short Rotation Forestry - SRF), Aufforstungs- und Wiederaufforstungsprojekten (A/R Projects) und Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) gefördert.
Wesentliches Ziel des Forschungsvorhabens war es, die Potenziale von SRF zu ermitteln und SRF als nachhaltig ökologisch sinnvolles Landnutzungssystem zur Biomasseerzeugung und Substitution fossiler Brennstoffe weiterzuentwickeln.
Insgesamt waren 14 internationale Institutionen, unter anderem aus China, Indien und Brasilien, am Projekt beteiligt.

Die wichtigsten Ergebnisse des Projekts sind:

Best Practices of Short Rotation Forestry – a description of practices focusing on SRF in Europe.

Land Use Management Standards – a description of issues that may be encountered during project development and implementation with a focus on African case studies.3.
Guidelines on Short Rotation Forestry – a synthesis of important considerations when planting SRF for project developers.4.
Profitability of Short Rotation Forestry from the Farmer’s Perspective – a synopsis of differences between developing and industrialized countries when considering business models, based on case studies from India, China, Kenya, and Poland. Sheds light also on the economic importance of combining annual crops in agroforestry systems.

Guidelines for Project Developers: Information about Cooking Stoves – an overview of small cooking stoves based on wood fuel and their efficiency.6.
Biomass Gasification, Options for Local Electricity and Charcoal Production from Short Rotation Forestry – a report on charcoal making. Charcoal is one of the main cooking fuels in many developing countries.7.
Research Agenda on Short Rotation Forestry – a document on the most pressing research issues in the sector.
