Sergiy Zorya

Sergiy Zorya graduated in 2003 in Agricultural Economics at the University of Goettingen. After graduation, he worked at the World Bank, Washington, D.C., where he joined via the highly-competitive young professional program. His first assignment was in Europe and Central Asia region, after which he moved to the East Asia and Pacific region, in both of which he assisted many countries to improve the quality of their agricultural sector programs through lending operations and analytical work.
He still works at the World Bank but currently works in the Agricultural and Rural Development unit, Africa region, focusing on Tanzania and Uganda. His responsibilities include preparing loans for agricultural programs and helping the client improve strategies and programs in the agricultural sector. In 2010 he was promoted to the post of senior economist.
He believes that the University of Goettingen is the excellent place that boosted in career in many respects in that:

- It houses the top professors in agricultural economics;
- It offers many opportunities for PhD students to participate in policy-related projects and international exchanges. it also encourages students to participate in the conferences;
- It has a liberal atmosphere, with many opportunities to study in English ;
- The institute of Agricultural Economics and Rural Development organizes regular excursions to Brussels and the former Soviet Union countries, expanding the students' horizon and showing opportunities;
- It houses the exchange program with the Latin American students, strengthening in this way the quality of education of home-grown students;
- The university is strategically located in the heart of German agriculture (Niedersachsen), in short proximity to visit Braunschweig and Brussels.

His advice to current students is that the current world is less predictable than it was several years ago. The same applies to job prospects and job security. The new generation of students should become more flexible and be ready for changes: study hard, and study various things, therefore. Knowing few foreign languages might be not a bad idea. Taking few semesters abroad would also not harm. But, important is that they do what they really like and become a good specialist in that area. In this way, they will enjoy your life and provide your best service to the society.
