Gradience in post-lexical phonology
In this talk we investigate the variable realization of /n/ before obstruents in constructions with function words (clitics, particles, complementizers, determiners) in Standard Greek. Building on Smolensky & Goldrick's (2016) Gradient Harmonic Grammar framework, we offer an analysis that attributes the attested variation to the gradient representation of /n/ and not to differences in the prosodic structure per se. More specifically, we claim that /n/ may have different levels of underlying strength according to the lexical and/or grammatical environment it appears in.
