Major Research Interests
We focus our research on deciphering the complex cellular processes that underlie organ degeneration, regeneration, and repair. The organ focus of the Zimmermann lab is on heart, brain, and skeletal muscle. We employ advanced human stem cell-based 2D and 3D models to simulate diseases and target therapies to achieve organ level therapeutic outcome. Deep phenotyping at the genome, transcriptome, proteome and functional level as well as integration of obtained data using computational approaches are widely employed. Cell painting and optogenetic tools are developed to visualize and control biological processes. Genome editing is broadly used for target validation and repair. The overarching goal of the Zimmermann lab is to develop and translate advanced medicinal therapy products (ATMPs) into clinical used based on deep systems biology insight.
