in Fourier Analysis and Spectral Theory
(wissenschaftliche Hilfskraft, 40 hours per month for one year)
The successful female candidates are master student of mathematics with a very good bachelor degree in mathematics. They will carry out research within one of the projects of the RTG, in collaboration with one of the principal investigators and potentially also a PhD student.
Sofia Kowalewskaja was one of the most successful and important mathematicians of her time. She achieved this in a time when women in this profession faced numerous obstacles. She obtained her doctoral degree from the University of Göttingen and was one of the first women ever to receive a doctoral degree in mathematics.
Even if circumstances have changed, the mathematical sciences are still coming short in enabling and involving female mathematicians on all levels. This way, the mathematical potential of a large part of the population is being wasted.
The Sofia-Kowalewskaja studentships are designed to prepare female master students more efficiently to take their next steps towards a research career. They offer the opportunity to get involved in current research projects. The salary offered will help the successful candidate to concentrate on research and studies. With such a preparation the studentship holders are promising candidates for future PhD positions within the RTG “Fourier Analysis and Spectral Theory'' or other PhD programs in mathematics.
