"Transactional Sociality: Market Moralities and Embedded Capital in Modern South Asia"
A joint MPI-CeMIS Workshop convened by Dr Sebastian Schwecke & Dr Ajay Gandhi
1 - 2 December 2016. Venue: MPI-MMG, Göttingen
The workshop engages anthropological and historical perspectives on transactional sociality in modern India. Transactional sociality refers to a broad swathe of social activity that is subject to commercial negotiation and routinized reciprocity. This workshop places empirical and conceptual emphasis on interlinked aspects of markets, finance, exchange and property. A core aim is to elaborate the historical genealogies, institutional processes, procedural frameworks, and moral idioms that underwrite economic life in India.
