As a Molbio master student you will be supported by an International Max Planck Research School Stipend at the amount of 992 €/month plus a health insurance subsidy of up to 100 €/month (in case your health insurance is not covered by your home insurance or family insurance) throughout your master studies, unless you have been awarded a comparable scholarship from other sources (e.g. DAAD or governmental scholarship program). Every student is required to declare all stipends, fellowships, grants etc. she/he receives from other sources to the Molecular Biology Office.
During your PhD studies, you are usually employed and funded by the hosting institution. Our Molecular Biology Program has as budget available for start-up, bridging, or wrap-up funding of PhD students if needed.
Budgets are available for students to attend international scientific conferences, research stays abroad and student-organized, scientific or cultural events.
Tuition fees for the Molecular Biology Program are covered to a great extent by the German government, with the exception of a fee of currently approx. 350 Euros per semester, depending on the type of scholarship you receive. Your semester fee includes the so-called semester ticket for free use of local buses (GöVB) as well as regional trains in Lower Saxony, Bremen and Hamburg.
Living costs (including accommodation in a student dormitory and health insurance) in Göttingen are approximately 900 Euros per month for a single person.
Single rooms are available in student dormitories administered by the Studentenwerk Göttingen. The monthly rent starts at approximately 180-250 Euros including fast internet connection and utilities. Our Molecular Biology Office will, upon request, assist you in reserving a dormitory room. Off-campus housing (mostly private) is usually more expensive, but offers a wider range of options. Assistance in finding off-campus housing is also offered by the International Office of the University and the Studentenwerk Göttingen.
German health insurance is obligatory for all students who are not citizens of the European Union. Special student insurance is available at low rates to all master students under 30 years of age. This insurance covers the costs of normal medical treatment (including dental care) in Germany. The monthly payment is currently approx. 120 Euros.
Throughout the first year, the Molecular Biology program covers the costs for private liability insurance for all students.
