During your PhD

Thesis Committee Meetings

If you are a PhD student at the Faculty of Biology and Psychology at least three thesis advisory committee (TAC) meetings and progress reports are mandatory. The first report must be provided within the first six months, the following at least once a year. The reports signed by the TAC members must be certified in the checklist for PhD students submitted with your thesis.

Achievement of credits

Doctoral students should acquire at least 20 C according to the regulations of the program. The achievements should be certified in the checklist for PhD students and submitted with you thesis. Earning credits as part of your dissertation is intended to prepare you for a career in science and to enable you to regularly present and discuss your work in front of a public audience, as well as to engage with the scientific work of fellow academics.

Therefore, the credits should be acquired from the following categories, with a primary focus on the first four sections and only optional from the fifth.

Doctoral students should attend a seminar or colloquium each semester. For colloquia 0,5 Credits per semester are awarded. The attendance should be certified by a signed confirmation of the supervisor at the checklist. For active participation in a seminar 2 Credits are awarded per semester, prerequisite is giving a talk in the seminar, which should be certified by the chair of the seminar.

Generally, the teaching should be done at the faculty. Exceptional teaching in other institutions can be certified individually. The examination committee of the faculty also can generally admit regular lectures of other faculties. Supervision of students in seminars or practical courses is awarded with 1 C per SWS (weekly hour) you have been involved in the module. Always give the respective module number! Supervision of lab rotations of at least 6 weeks and bachelor theses are awarded with 2 C. Furthermore, once during the period of dissertation the doctoral student can award 3 C for supervision of a Master's thesis. The respective confirmations should be signed by the supervisor of the doctoral student.

Active participation (presentation of a poster or giving a talk) is awarded with 3 C. Each candidate must attend at least once, credits can be earned for a maximum of two participations. The confirmation should be signed by the supervisor of the doctoral student.

For this section there are no general rules. If the student attends key competence modules of the University, the amount of credits corresponds to the stated amount for the module. In other cases, the faculties examination committee will determine the credit achievement.

Thesis extension

According to the doctoral regulations, the dissertation should be submitted within 3 years after the start of the project. An application for extension to up to four years, composed of two extensions of 6 months each, is possible through the thesis advisory committee. The first extension must be requested at least 3 months prior to the original submission date. Extensions resulting in a dissertation duration of more than four years must be approved by the Dean of Faculty's Office.
