Awareness, Anthropology and Aesthetics - Ethnographic Explorations of Perception in Urban Life (WS 2025/26)
Abstract
In this research-based teaching project, students develop ethnographic perspectives on perception and aesthetics in everyday urban life. Exercises such as awareness walks, perception diaries, and visual miniatures serve as starting points for their own small-scale field research. As part of a collaboration with Prof. Heidi Upton from St. John's University (NYC), students work in international tandems on comparative reflections and, over the course of the semester, develop a research-based perspective, which they demonstrate in a presentation and a written paper.
