Behavior and Cognition

Mission statement

Behavior and Cognition (BeCog) encompasses two closely linked doctoral programs that explore the foundations and evolution of human and nonhuman primate behavior. Reflecting the growing importance of research into behavior and its underlying processes, BeCog provides an integrative and interdisciplinary platform for doctoral education.

BeCog brings together students from diverse academic backgrounds, including biology, psychology, linguistics, neuroscience, and computer science to conduct research in psychology, anthropology, evolutionary biology, and related disciplines. Core research areas include the influence of social and ecological factors on behavior, as well as its emotional, physiological, neurological, and cognitive foundations. Both empirical and theoretical approaches—including model-based methods—are equally valued.

Depending on their academic background, doctoral candidates enroll in either BeCog (Dr. rer. nat.) or BeCog (Dr. phil.). Interdisciplinary collaboration and exchange are central elements of the program. Students are typically integrated into one (sometimes two) research groups and guided by a three-member thesis committee. Regular colloquia offer opportunities to present and discuss research progress in a supportive environment.

Through seminars, method courses, and summer schools, students gain deep insight into their research fields and develop the skills needed for independent scientific work. They become familiar with the structures and expectations of the international scientific community and actively participate by presenting at national and international conferences. Involvement in teaching further prepares students for academic careers. In addition, key qualifications courses allows students to build competencies beyond their research focus (e.g., rhetoric and didactic skills), equipping them for careers both within and beyond academia.
