Content:
To be trauma-informed in the context of higher education means to understand the widespread prevalence and impact of various form of adversity and violence on individuals, families, and communities and to use that understanding to develop educational policies and practices that reduce the risk of retraumatization and promote learning and growth. During this online training, participants will learn about different types of trauma and their impact on both students and educators. We will also explore strategies to recognize and respond to our own and others’ stress to enhance learning and well-being using a trauma-informed framework.


Learning objectives:
After this workshop, participants can:

  • Recognize signs and symptoms of student distress;
  • Identify strategies for responding to students in ways that reduce distress;
  • Locate resources to support their students’ and their own empowerment and well-being.

Janice Carello, PhD, LMSW: is a native speaker of English (USA). She is an Associate Professor of Social Work at PennWest University in Pennsylvania, USA. Her scholarship focuses on retraumatization in educational settings and trauma-informed approaches in higher education.
