Library

The library of the Institute of Mathematics is located on the first floor of the Institute’s main building at Bunsenstraße 3–5. It provides a select collection of specialized literature for research, teaching, and study, primarily to members and staff of the Department of Mathematics as well as students of the University of Göttingen, but also to other researchers and faculty members. It is therefore designed as an open-access reference library. Therefore, items may only be borrowed within the Institute under certain conditions.

Reading Room
The front reading room houses the majority of the monograph collection. The discussion room (Sprechsaal), equipped with chalkboards and a scanner, is accessible via the front reading room. Discussions and group work are permitted here. Additional collections are located in the rear reading room. In addition to conference proceedings, series, handbooks, and encyclopedias, commemorative volumes, collected works, biographies, textbooks, and periodicals, you will also find the newer, unbound journal holdings here. Computer workstations with internet access are available to students in the rear reading room. Bound journal volumes are located on the gallery.

Catalogue and Library Collection
We are currently transitioning to a new library system. As a result, the library’s collection is currently listed in two separate catalogs. The old institute catalog lists only materials acquired up to 2012 and is being gradually transferred to the Göttingen University Catalog (GUK). Acquisitions from 2013 onward are listed in the GUK. You can search selectively within the cataloged collection of the Mathematical Institute’s library via the GUK. Simply select "Mathematisches Institut" here.

As part of the transition to a new library system, the entire reference collection is being assigned location call numbers and optimized in terms of its composition. Acquisitions from 2013 onward are therefore temporarily also available in the rear reading room.

Borrow Items
Only members and affiliates of the Department of Mathematics and the associated Collaborative Research Centers at the University of Göttingen who have their own office within one of these academic institutions are authorized to borrow items from the library’s collection as needed for an appropriate period of time. As a rule, this period should not exceed 14 to 21 days. Borrowed items must remain in the office and be made available upon request. Borrowed volumes must be returned to the library supervisor or to the office of the Mathematical Institute. Under no circumstances may they be returned to the shelves on one’s own initiative. Abstracting journals and loose-leaf journal issues in the rear reading room are generally not available for loan.
