About the Institute

The Institute of International Law and European Law at the Georg-August University of Goettingen comprises three departments and is among the largest of its kind in Germany. Founded in 1930 it has become a center of research in public international law, human rights, international economic and environmental law, European and constitutional law.

The members of the Institute engage in various research projects, academic co-operations and international associations. They serve in judicial functions (German Federal Constitutional Court and United Nations Human Rights Committee), as legal representatives and as advisors for governmental and non-governmental institutions.

As part of its academic teaching program the Institute offers a broad spectrum of courses in International and European Law, both in German and English and contributes to the Faculty's law curriculum for the First State Examination. Its course program is complemented by guest lectures, extracurricular events and field trips to international courts and institutions. Guest researchers from all parts of the world are welcome.

The Institute is dedicated to support young academics and invites them to participate in various research activities. Law students join the Jessup Moot Court Competition and the Editorial Board of the Goettingen Journal of International Law. The newly established Doctoral Programme offers outstanding young graduates in international law an opportunity to receive additional training along with writing their dissertation.

The Institute's library is one of the largest of its kind in Germany and provides access to all professionals working in international and European law. Comprising an extensive selection of international and European law literature (approx. 60.000 volumes and periodicals) along with numerous online resources, it provides for excellent research conditions.

The institute regularly hosts international symposia and conferences on current issues of international and European law.
