Housing and place-making in Indonesia and Germany: research practice in international tandem groups

Hintergrund:
Im Frühjahr 2021 wurde ein MoU (Memorandum of Understanding) über die Zusammenarbeit in Lehre und Austausch von Studierenden und Lehrenden von GISCA und FISIP UI (Fakultät für Sozial- und Politikwissenschaften) der Universitas Indonesia, Depok, Indonesien, abgeschlossen. Während einer Forschungsreise im Herbst/Winter 2021 entwickelten Nurman Nowak (GISCA), Dr. Paul Christensen (GISCA), Imam Ardhianto und Rhino Ariefiansyah (beide FISIP UI), die hier vorgestellte Lehrveranstaltung, die im SoSe2022 schließlich erfolgreich durchgeführt wurde.

Abstract
Due to urbanisation and the flux transformation of urban environment, there is an increasing interest in the study of urbanisation and its social implications. Regarding the ever-growing interdisciplinary interest in ethnography for the study of the urban space, it is important that ethnographic researchers reflect on this basic methodological understanding and reflect their experiences on an academic level. In our joint international virtual research exercise, we use tandem research project among students from JABODETABEK and Göttingen to practice research methods and reflect on the social transformations of the urban collaboratively.

The main goals of the joint course between the Göttingen Institute of Social and Cultural Anthropology (GISCA) and the Department of Anthropology FISIP Universitas Indonesia will be the following:

  • acquire basic knowledge on urban anthropology
  • practice research skills in virtual research tandems
  • share empirical findings and discuss research results
  • develop methodological and epistemological issues for further research.
