Diversity is a 'hot topic' in organisations. Academic institutions such as universities, non-university research centres and funding agencies are increasingly under public pressure to account for their approach to diversity - in particular to close their 'gender' or 'ethnicity data gaps'. Diversity is now a guiding principle in many universities, with dedicated offices for gender equality, equal opportunities and diversity. For the first time, the presidency of the German Rectors' Conference (Hochschulrektorenkonferenz - HRK) includes a specific role focusing on "International Affairs, Equality and Diversity". The German Research Foundation (DFG) has also added diversity to its research-oriented equality standards.
This conference will address the latest developments and challenges in the field of diversity and invites participants to discuss diversity as a challenge for higher education policy. Two expert presentations will provide insights into the approach to diversity at North American universities, which have longstanding experience in this area, and relate these insights to the academic landscape in Germany. The academic presentations will be followed by a higher education policy panel discussion, in which representatives from various German academic institutions will discuss the opportunities and risks of organisational approaches to diversity.
The conference is organised by the DFG-funded network "Modes of Organisational Diversity: Theory, Empiricism, and Practices," which will explore the creation of diversity by organisations over the next three years, starting in November. More information about the network will be available at the conference.
