Data-driven Analysis of Biological Networks

As part of the cerebral cortex, the neocortex processes a wide variety of information. The neuronal circuits in the cortex perform various tasks ranging from signal recognition to object perception, short and long-term memory and motor skills. A vast number of neurones work hand in hand to achieve precisely what is required. The Department for Data-Driven Analysis of Biological Networks applies methods from information theory to decipher which particular neurons perform which tasks. Essentially, the aim is to unravel the common algorithm that underlies information processing in the brain. To achieve this, the working group utilises different methods and develops them further so that they can be applied to the respective questions:

  • simulations of neuronal networks
  • information theory
  • partial information decomposition
  • local information dynamics
