General information
Please note that the University of Göttingen does not provide accommodation. Admission and enrolment at the University does not imply a commitment to a room in student halls of residence or other accommodation.
Unfortunately, in Göttingen - as in Germany in general - it is very difficult to find affordable accommodation. Especially in the months of September, October and November, many people are looking for accommodation. It is therefore advisable to start looking for a room as early as possible.
Rooms in halls of residence run by the Studierendenwerk cost between €300 and €400 and are therefore relatively inexpensive by Göttingen standards. Rents on the private housing market are significantly higher. Rooms in shared flats (WGs) cost between €450 and €700, flats with their own bathroom and kitchen between €600 and €800 per month, depending on location and furnishings.
Multi-room flats for families are both expensive (from €750 per month) and difficult to find.
Please fill out our registration form if you require our assistance in finding accommodation. Please complete the registration form only once. Please note! You can NOT use our registration form to apply for a room at the Studierendenwerk! It is only intended to help with the general room search.
If you are interested in a room at the Studierendenwerk, please click on the next menu item for more information. Programme/exchange students can register only via the Accommodation Support for a place in a hall of residence.
Many international students live in student dormitories. Most dormitories are run by the Studierendenwerk, an independent non-profit organisation that works closely with the university.
If you are
- coming to Göttingen for an exchange programme (e.g. Erasmus+)
- or are enrolled in double/joint degree or Erasmus Mundus study programmes,
you must register directly with Accommodation Support for a room in the student dormitory. The Studierendenwerk provides Accommodation Support with a limited number of rooms for students enrolled on these programmes. It is not possible for these students to register directly for a room in a dormitory via the Studierendenwerk.
If you are a Degree-Seeking Student and would like a room at the Studierendenwerk, then please go back now to this page. Degree-seeking students must register for a place in a dormitories directly via the Studierendenwerk.
If you are coming to Göttingen for a research stay, an internship or a short-term stay of 1 to a maximum of 12 months and are enrolled either at your home university or at the University of Göttingen, you can apply for the dormitory Kreuzbergring 44-46. You must also apply here directly on the Studierendenwerk website. When completing the online form, please indicate the institute or organisation at the University of Göttingen where you will be completing your research stay or internship and the duration of your stay.
