Together with Paul Michel (University of Cologne) and Sebastian Leue (HWWI Hamburg), we investigate how exogenous shocks in migration journey risks affect migration patterns at distinct stages of the migration process. We complement our analysis of observational data for crossing risks at the Central Mediterranean with an information provision experiment in Nigeria to better understand the role of crossing risks for initial migration decisions. We have fielded a large-scale online survey and a follow-up in Nigeria end of 2024, co-funded through the Connex-Program of the Dr. Hans Riegel Foundation.

As part of the project, we organized a workshop on "Economics and Politics of Irregular Migration" on October 9–10, 2025, in Hamburg, hosted by HWWI and funded by Connex, Dr. Hans Riegel, and the DFG. You can find the workshop program here.
