Codetermination in the Supervisory Board and Its Impact on Corporate Governance

This study examines the role of corporate codetermination in German corporations with regard to corporate performance and decisions during the financial and economic crisis of 2008/2009. The study was conducted in collaboration with the Hans Böckler Foundation.

The aim of this study is to investigate the impact and role of corporate codetermination during the financial and economic crisis using systematically compiled empirical data and results. The findings from the analysis of corporate performance and decisions present a relatively clear picture:

  • Companies with codetermination proved to be more resilient during the financial and economic crisis

  • Companies with codetermination also recovered more quickly from its effects

  • In companies with codetermination, there is a stronger focus on long-term corporate interests (employment, investments, etc.)
