GIS & Remote Sensing Course 2015

GIS & Remote Sensing Course in Hue, Vietnam from 28th September to 2nd October 2015

Between 28th September and 2nd October 2015 the first of several courses in the DAAD Project "Networking on Land Use / Land Cover Change by GIS & Remote Sensing" was held at Hue University of Agriculture and Forestry (HUAF) in Hue, Vietnam. The courses goal was to jointly develop a concept that would allow M.Sc. graduates to solve similar scientific questions in the future confidently and on their own.

For this reason the course explicitly employed a regional or local focus: the area of interest was chosen to be Thua Thien-Hue Province around Hue City. In regard to future courses and collaborations the A Luoi District was singled out for work-flows that would require a higher resolution or lower administrative level. The actual content included the theoretical background needed to comprehend physical principles and basics in remote sensing and GIS; the finding and download of freely available data online (satellite imagery, administrative boundaries, climate data...); and as the most important part the data processing and analysis for a qualified assessment of developments and processes in the region. Furthermore the use of GPS discussed and advantages and disadvantages of the use of professional devices vs. smartphone apps evaluated.

The courses success was not only highlighted by the keen interest of the HUAF students, but also through the participation of colleagues outside of HUAF: the presence of a WWF Vietnam member as well as lecturers from Hue University of Sciences greatly increased the atmosphere of the course and helped to foster a basis for further cooperation in this regards between all of these local agents.
