Important information on application and admission procedure for prospective M.A. students at the Faculty of Humanities
You have to take the following steps in order to begin your master studies at the Faculty of Humanities:
1. A successful online-application is the first step for your master studies.
2. After your online-application we'll check your documents. In a few weeks you will receive either an admission letter or a letter of refusal.
3. After receiving an admission letter you have to enroll for your major programme. Module packages (minor subjects) will be added to your FlexNow account by the Examination Office later.
4. After successful enrollment you can register for the courses of your master programme/your master programmes.
5. If you have got a learning agreement, you have to complete the BA modules from the learning agreement within your first two semesters. Please note that you cannot register in FlexNow for the modules from the learning agreement. Please inform your teacher about this issue and ask him/her as well as the study counselor of your department to sign the form for learning agreements (see right column). Afterwards, you have to send the fulfilled and signed form for learning agreements to the master coordination.
Please notice that the BA modules from the learning agreement cannot be considered for your master degree programme.
We recommend to all new students to take part in the orientation week (offered each winter semester, see column on the right hand side). Students, who begin their studies in the summer semester, should contact their study and examination counselor at the Faculty as well as the study counselor at the department (programme coordinator).
If you have a BA degree from the University of Göttingen or if you will finish your BA studies at the University of Göttingen soon - this applies to both non-international students and international students - please note the following steps:
1. If you intend to continue your studies at the University of Göttingen, you have to re-register for the next semester in time. If you decide not to begin your master studies at the University of Göttingen later on, you can request reimbursement of semester fees.
2. You can apply for a master programme even if you have not yet finished your BA studies. For an application you have to provide your FlexNow transcript with min. 150 ECTS. If your BA studies will be acknowledged as relevant for the master programme you applied for, a conditional admission will be granted allowing conditional enrollment.
3. If you have received a letter of conditional admission, you have to make sure that all exam scores of your BA studies including your BA thesis are registered in your FlexNow account by November 15th (application for winter semester) or by May 15th (application for summer semester) . If you write your BA thesis at another Faculty, you have to provide your BA degree certificate or an equivalent confirmation to the master coordination by that date.
Please notice: Acoording to a new regulation it is possible to receive an extension of the deadline for providing proof of your BA degree certificate until March 31st (application for winter semester) or until September 30th (application for summer semester). An extension of this deadline is only possible in the following two cases:
a) only the BA thesis is missing in order to complete your BA studies or
b) the BA thesis has already been submitted to the Examinations Office and max. 6 ECTS are missing for the completion of your BA studies.
The master coordinator will check which master students can receive an extension of the deadline and will inform the students after November 15th or May 15th (depending on the semester you applied for).
4. If you have received a letter of (conditional) admission, you have to hand in the "Antrag auf Änderung ihres Studienverlaufs" at the Office of Student Affairs. International students have to submit this document to the International Office (Mrs. El-Omar) instead.
5. After your enrollment you can register for the courses of your programme.
If you have a BA degree from a University other than the University of Göttingen - this applies to both non-international students and international students - please note the following steps:
1. You can apply for a master programme even if you have not yet finished your BA studies. International students who need a visa have to apply during the regular application period. If you have not yet completed your BA studies at the time of application, you must submit an official Transcript of Records with min. 150 credits (in case that your BA study programme is based on the European Credit Transfer System). If your BA studies will be acknowledged as relevant for the master programme you applied for, a conditional admission will be granted allowing conditional enrollment.
2. Your Bachelor studies (i.e. a total of 180 credits) must be completed by November 15th (application for winter semester) or until May 15th (application for summer semester). You have to provide your Bachelor degree certificate or an equivalent confirmation to the master coordination by that date.
After November 15th or May 15th (depending on the semester you applied for) the master coordinator will check which students can be granted an extension of the deadline. Appropriate evidence must have been submitted by then to the master coordination (by email). The students will be informed by email about the result.
3. If you have received a letter of (conditional) admission, you have to enroll at the Office of Student Affairs by September 30th (for winter semester) or by March 31st (for summer semester). International students have to enroll at the International Office (Mrs. El-Omar) instead.
4. After enrollment you will receive your access data for the online services of the University of Göttingen (eCampus, online course system Stud.IP and exam administration system FlexNow). Then you can register for courses of your master programme/your master programmes. Please notice that each department has its own deadlines for course registration. You can find these deadlines either in UniVZ or you have to ask your programme coordinator. As soon as the enrollment is done you can collect your student ID.
