SCIENTIFIC INTERESTS AND GOALS

I find the regulation of gene expression very interesting. It is amazing how many different levels of control are exerted to match gene expression with the physiological needs of the organism. A good example is the connection between requirements on the protein level, such as the heat shock response or the protein response, where transcription factors are liberated or activated in response to increased concentrations of unfolded proteins. Also intriguing is the integration of external signals that reach the cell in signal transduction pathways which converge on the level of gene expression. Through this program I want to develop not only my theoretical knowledge, but also gain experience in experimental application to better understand the mechanism of gene regulation.
