SCIENTIFIC INTERESTS AND GOALS
Currently I am particularly fascinated by evolutionary and molecular developmental biology. It boggles my mind that the complexity and diversity of animal anatomy can be achieved by such relatively simple mechanisms as morphogen gradients and cell-cell interactions. The fact that body plans are determined by developmental programs makes development one of the most powerful ways of understanding evolution. The counterintuitive results from this branch of research (e.g. that many developmental genes are highly conserved across huge evolutionary distances) makes this field that much more interesting. Despite this, my scientific interests are broad, and include systems biology, mechanobiology, microscopy, molecular genetics and immunology. I look forward to sampling several fields before specializing, as the program in Göttingen allows.
