Seminar on the current developments of Brexit

The Jean Monnet Chair offers a seminar on the Brexit and its current developments to advanced students in summer semester 2020. On 31 January, the United Kingdom has left the European Union. The seminar will address the legal consequences, analyze the so-called Withdrawal Agreement and discuss current developments, particularly the negotiations on an agreement on the future relations. The introductory meeting is supposed to take place on 14 April at 6 pm in the Library of the Institute for International Law and European Law. Participants of the introductory meeting of Wednesday 29 January are admitted automatically. Participants can receive a language certificate. Further information can be found here.

Guest Lecture about Nord Stream 2

On 21.01.2020, Bernd Westphal will deliver a guest lecture on Nord Stream 2 in German and European foreign policy. Bernd Westphal is a member of the Bundestag and the spokesperson on economic and energy policy of the SPD parliamentary group. The underwater gas pipeline Nord Stream 2 is designed to transport 55 billion cubic meters of natural gas from Russia directly into the European Union. However, the project is politically highly controversial. In nearly no other field of the energy and foreign economy, geostrategical interests of important global players (EU, USA, Russia, Poland, Ukraine) are more conflicting. The lecture starts at 4:15 pm in hall ZHG 001. It is part of the lecture European Law I by Dr. Till Patrik Holterhus, MLE., LL.M. (Yale) and is hosted by the Jean Monnet Chair. Event Poster

Seminar on the European Green Deal

The Jean Monnet Chair offers a seminar on the new "European Green Deal" to advanced students. The Green Deal was recently announced by the new European Commission. It aims at making the EU climate-neutral by 2050, protecting natural habitats, unlocking economic growth and promoting employment by way of an inclusive transition. The seminar will address the legal aspects of this ambitious project, including EU and international dimensions. Introductory meetings will take place on 29 January and 16 April at 6 pm in the Library of the Institute for International Law and European Law. Participants can receive a language certificate. Seminar on current developments in International Economic Law

The Jean Monnet Chair offers a seminar on "Current Developments in International Economic Law and the EU WTO - Trade Agreements - Investment Law – Sustainable Development - China" to advanced students. The course will adress, amongst others, new trends in international investment law and recent EU trade agreements. The first introductory meeting will take place on Thursday, 16 July. "The Rule of Law in international and Domestic Contexts" – The Research Forum of the European Society of International Law, Göttingen, 4th and 5th April 2019

Does rule of law exist in the spheres of international law and European law? An if so, how can it be maintained in times of contestation? Such questions were the issue at this year's Research Forum of the European Society of International Law in Göttingen on the 4th and 5th April 2019. 160 legal scholars travelled to Göttingen in order to discuss the imminent questions with respect to the rule of law. The Research Forum was organised by the European Society of International Law (ESIL) together with holder of the Jean Monnet Chair for 'European Union and Global Sustainable Development Through Law', Prof. Peter-Tobias Stoll. The Forum offered a number of panels on historic, theoretical and economic aspects of the rule of law. Full report

Seminar on Sustainable Development

The Jean Monnet Chair offers a seminar on "Sustainable Development and sustainability reporting" to all interested student. The course will adress, amongst others, the history and concept of sustainable development, sustainable development goals and the implementation of sustainable development in in German, European and international law. 2019 ESIL Research Forum

The 2019 ESIL Research Forum will take place on Thursday, 4 and Friday, 5 April 2019 and address the topic: “The rule of law in international and domestic contexts: synergies and challenges”. It has a small and intensive format targeting scholars at an early stage of their careers. Approximately 15-25 paper submissions following the Call for Papers will be selected.

Seminar on Asian Development Bank

15.11.2018
The Jean Monnet Chair offers a seminar about legal aspects of Multilateral Development Bank Operations. The course will be conducted by Cheong-Ann Png, Assistant General Counsel of the Asian Development Bank. Cheong-Ann leads the ADB legal team for sovereign lending operations in Southeast Asia, Central Asia, Afghanistan, Pakistan and the Caucasus region. The course starts Monday, 17 December. Participants can receive a language certificate.

Call for Papers

The Jean Monnet Chair and the International Economic Law Interest Group of the European Society of International Law (ESIL) invite young researchers to submit papers for a Full-day Workshop on April 3, 2019 at the 2019 ESIL Göttingen Research Forum. The workshop will adress the topics “Preferential Trade Agreements: Progress and Stability for the World Economic Order?” and “The Rule of Law and International Economic Law”. Deadline for submissions is December 16, 2018.

Jean Monnet Chair

Prof. Dr. Stoll and the Department for International Economic Law and Environmental Law have been granted a Jean Monnet Chair by the European Union. Jean Monnet Chairs are assigned in a pan-European selection procedure to professors who especially value the European integration in their research and teaching. The scope of the Jean Monnet Chair is to develop and strenghten lectures, research and further projects with an emphasis on the European Union and Global Sustainable Development Through Law.

Summer Law School on International Investment Law 3 - 7 September, 2018

The first summer school of the University of Goettingen and the University of São Paulo focuses on International Investment Law, in particular on the relationship between Brazil and Germany, as well as exploring controversial issues such as conflicts of rights and the role of International Customary Law in International Investment Law. The aim of the summer school is to broaden the participants’ knowledge about International Investment Law and provide participants with the opportunity to network with leading international legal scholars and practitioners.

Call for Papers - 11th Annual Legal Research Network Conference - Legal Developments in Europe and the Future of European Rule of Law

The Law Faculties of the Universities of Bristol, Budapest (ELTE), Ghent, Göttingen, Groningen, Lille – Nord de France, Turku and Uppsala cordially invite junior and senior researchers to participate in the 11th Annual Legal Research Network Conference on 4-7 September 2018. The conference will be hosted by the Law Faculty of the University of Göttingen and will deal with 'Legal Developments in Europe and the Future of European Rule of Law'.

The book 'Investitionsschutz und Verfassung' by Peter-Tobias Stoll, Till Patrik Holterhus and Henner Gött is going to be published in July. It deals with current elements of investment protection law from the perspective of the German and European constitutional law.

Block Course: 'The U.S. Supreme Court and American Constitutional Development'

The Institute of International and European Law is glad to announce the two-weeks block course "The U.S. Supreme Court and American Constitutional Development" from 12-22 June 2017 at the University of Göttingen.
The course is taught by Dr. Gordon Silverstein, who is the Assistant Dean for Graduate Programs as well as Lecturer in Law at Yale Law School and a renowned expert in American constitutional law.

Interactive Workshop for Law Students: 'Acquisition of an Enterprise: Questions of German and Chinese Law'

In collaboration with international law firm Baker & McKenzie, the Institute of International and European Law, Department of International Economic and Environmental Law, the Sino-German Institute for Legal Studies and ELSA Göttingen e.V. will convene an interactive workshop for law students on issues of German and Chinese law concerning the cross-border acquisition of enterprises.

On December, 9th 2016 there will be an international conference with the topic 'The Role of the European Parliament in the Conclusion and Implementation of Agreements on International Economic Law Issues' will take place in the European Parliament in Brussels. It is organized by the Interest Group International Economic Law of the European Society of International Law together with the European Parliament.
