Writing a BA or Master's Thesis in the Anglophone Division

Essentially, a thesis is not that different from a term paper - it is simply longer and more complex. This page contains a number of information sheets that outline formal aspects rather than explaining how to set about finding topics, sources or planning your arguments. For questions on any of these topics, please contact your supervisors.

Thesis Writing and Module Information for BA Students

For students enrolled in the BA degree programme on English for Teaching Purposes/English: Language, Literatures and Cultures who wish to write their thesis in our division, we offer a colloquium which is designed to accompany the thesis writing process (module B.Eng.307, 3 credits). The colloquium addresses writing and planning aspects as well as offering a platform for presenting, and getting feedback on, the various thesis projects.

Writing a Master's Thesis

Many Master's students find it difficult to approach the final - and very weighty - step in their degree programmes, the Master's thesis. Without a course that provides a topic a backbone, choosing an area of interest, a corpus of texts and a topic to discuss can be daunting indeed. Our information brochure outlines how to set about preparing a thesis project, what options there are and what to look out for in detail. Students should be aware that the topic of a Master's thesis in our division should be from areas that we cover in teaching, viz. from Anglophone literature and culture

Module Information for MA Students

Students enrolled in the Master of Arts programme who wish to write their thesis on a topic from Anglophone Literature and Culture are offered two modules. The research module M.EP.09a expects students to participate in a colloquium in which they learn how more advanced students approach their thesis projects. At the same time they develop their own projects in a series of meetings with their supervisor. The exam set for the module is an ungraded portfolio. This module is an elective.

A compulsory module for MA students writing their thesis with us is the completion module M.EP.06a. This also contains a colloquium where thesis projects are presented and critically reviewed. The module accompanies the writing process and therefore cannot be taken at the same time as M.EP.09a. Note that students are expected to be in the process of writing their thesis when they register for this module. They may be debarred from completing the participation part of the module if they do not fulfil this criterion.
