Universities take a stand: for democracy and diversity

The University of Göttingen supports the campaign ‘Universities take a stand’, which starts on 13 October 2025. The aim is to stand together for democratic values and respectful, non-discriminatory coexistence.

Science thrives on openness, diversity and the free exchange of ideas – values that are inextricably linked to our democracy.

But these foundations are under threat:

  • Scientists and students, especially those in marginalised positions, are increasingly experiencing verbal and even physical attacks.
  • Right-wing populist and radical forces denigrate entire fields of study and question scientific findings, equality and protection against discrimination.

That is why we are taking a stand. The Universities Take a Stand campaign calls on all university members to take action to promote a diverse and free university landscape and respectful, non-discriminatory coexistence.

The University of Göttingen takes a stand:

The University of Göttingen wholeheartedly supports the campaign – for a university culture of democracy and solidarity. We know that equal opportunities and diversity are the basis for everyone to reach their potential – in their studies, in teaching, in research and in the workplace.
