Beschreibung Abstract: CIL IV 5296 is an extremely intriguing graffito, not only because it is one of the longest and most complex carmina Pompeiana, but also because it is, apparently, one of the few ancient documents that preserve a female poetic voice. The poem has been frequently misunderstood by past scholarship; even its physical location, clearly described in the excavation reports, has been wrongly reconstructed sometimes, and this led to widespread misapprehensions about the literary genre of the fragment. The text itself is difficult to read, interpret, and reconstruct, but is well worth studying: its literary texture, in fact, can give us an idea about the circulation of literary themes in Pompeii.
