Abstract: This project investigates the political and economic mechanisms driving China’s expanding influence in international trade. Using the lens of economic diplomacy, the research examines how China employs diplomatic engagement and economic policy tools—such as state visits, development cooperation, and investment projects—to advance its external economic interests. A core element of the project is the creation of new, openly accessible databases on Chinese development cooperation and diplomatic visits. These datasets will enable, for the first time, detailed subnational analysis of China’s international activities. By shedding light on the political economy of China’s foreign trade, ranging from domestic drivers to international cooperation dynamics, the project contributes to strengthening China expertise in Germany. Its findings aim to support policymakers, businesses, and the broader public in assessing China’s global strategies and making informed economic and foreign policy decisions.
