Deposition of Strains
If you are interested in depositing an algal strain at the SAG, please contact us here: epsag@uni-goettingen.de.
Strains that can be considered for accession by the SAG must meet some minimum criteria:
- The strain should be of particular interest in taxonomy, biotechnology, or other research areas. For example, it may represent a new species (authentic strain), exhibit unique morphological or physiological characteristics, or have been isolated from an extreme or unusual habitat.
- The strain must be unialgal; axenic strains are preferred.
- The strain should be identified, preferably to the species level.
- It is essential that sufficient information is provided with the strain, e.g., about its origin (description of the locality), date of isolation, name of the person who isolated the strain, taxonomic position, and culture conditions, preferably in the form of a publication.
- The culture conditions for the strain should meet or be close to existing cultivation procedures.
Compliance with the Nagoya Protocol on Access and Benefit Sharing:
The SAG follows The MIRRI Best Practice Manual on Access and Benefit Sharing (download here).
You are required to fill out the Accession Form as part of the deposit process.
Depositors have the responsibility to demonstrate due diligence in determining if the material to be deposited at SAG falls within the scope of the Nagoya Protocol (NP) on Access and Benefit Sharing (ABS).
Before completing the Accession Form, please verify whether your strain falls under the scope of the Nagoya Protocol.
This is especially important for material collected after October 11, 2014, in a country that is a party to the Nagoya Protocol. Further information about the Nagoya Protocol and national/international legislation, including national contact points, can be found on the webpages of the ABS clearing house.
After receipt of a new strain considered for accession, it will receive a temporary SAG strain number until it is accepted into the permanent collection. It will then be assigned a unique and immutable strain number. Subsequently, it will be listed in the public SAG catalogue and made available to the public.
