International Symposium cum Workshop -Ecosystem-based Management and Biodiversity Conservation in Forestry for Asia-Pacific

The Symposium is jointly organised by the Centre for Tropical and Subtropical Agriculture and Forestry (CeTSAF), Georg-August University Gottingen, Germany; University of Dresden, Tharandt, Germany and The Asia-Pacific Association of Forestry Research Institute (APAFRI) on behalf of the Bogor Agricultural University (IPB) and the Faculty of Forestry of the Gadjah Mada University Yogyakarta (UGM) of Indonesia. The symposium will be held in Bogor and Yogyakarta, Indonesia, with the financial support from the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD)

Contents:
Global climate change and increasing prices for fuel have severe impact on forest resources. While several emerging economies quit the management and use of their domestic forests – mostly as result of natural disasters or shrinking forest area – poorer countries cannot afford such a rigorous cut. In opposite, the accelerating demand for wood and wood-based products of the fast emerging economies increases the pressure on their neighbour´s remaining forests further. In a globalized free economy there seem to be no limits; the fast growing Asia-Pacific region is a major player as well as a major victim of this trend.
This scenario is not new and the forestry sector is aware of this situation first of all. Specific regional and global political frameworks, as now with the APEC* communiqué and the REDD**-Program, inter alia, fosters to reverse this situation. But how
to limit unwanted exploitation of the remaining forests,
to manage forests sustainable,
to increase the value of (degraded) forests,
to identify and incorporate site-adapted native tree species,
to reforest the immense areas of wasteland,
to keep and develop Biodiversity Conservation,
to direct private and public investments towards sustainable forestry,
to incorporate local stakeholders into the forest-related decision processes,
to collaborate within and between the forest related sectors in education and science,
to spread promising forest concepts into the Asia-Pacific Region?
The long list indicates the complex knowledge basis to reverse the actual trend. This symposium therefore will provide a scientific platform for both researcher and practitioners to discuss the state of the art and the necessary direction of research on sustainable forest management and biodiversity conservation in their respective countries of Asia-Pacific.

Aims:
The main objective of the symposium is to review the current state of art of forestry in the Asia-Pacific region and to develop future strategies for scientific collaborations; while the specific objectives are:
- Bringing scientists and practitioners together to share their experience in forest ecosystem-based management and biodiversity conservation in the region
- Develop collaborative project proposals between interested countries related to Ecosystem-based Management and Biodiversity Conservation in Forestry for Asia-Pacific
- To further operationalize the German-Alumni Forestry Networks in Asia-Pacific region
Thematic Background:
- Genetics and silvicultural tools applied in forest ecosystem management and biodiversity conservation
- Achieving ecologically stable forest stands; introducing sustainable forest management
- Matching tree species to site as basis for ecological forest management planning; improving the structure, stability of forests, quality of production and maintenance of tree species composition
- Site and ecological preconditions of forest ecosystem management; assessment of the site situation and site potential
- Environmentally sound forest operations; ecologically acceptable technologies for forest roads construction
- Policy and economic aspects of forest ecosystem management and biodiversity conservation (notably the increasingly global nature of wood markets)
- Managing forestry knowledge in the tropics and subtropics
Participants:
The invited participants are requested to take over clearly defined responsibilities of submitting a full paper in line with the above mentioned “Thematic Scope”. Key notes and overview paper presentations will be submitted by renowned experts.
The participants of the symposium are mainly graduates from German Universities, coming from the Asia-Pacific region. Preferences will be given particularly those who are in responsible position in forestry in their respective countries and are involved in research corresponding to forest management and biodiversity conservation.
