Press release: “Many people return to study in Göttingen”

Nr. 158/2010 - 01.08.2010

“Learning German between the Gänseliesel fountain and the university” – this is the motto of the international summer courses this year at the University of Göttingen, which begin August 2nd. More than 120 participants from around the world will immerse themselves in the German language and culture for four weeks to improve their language abilities and familiarity with the country. The language courses are available for nine different levels of German proficiency with optional modules such as conversation and phonetics. Students can also enjoy a variety of leisure programmes including excursions to Hanover, Weimar and the Harz mountains. The courses are being held by the Institute for Intercultural Communication (IIK), which also organises the international spring and fall courses.

“In addition to the language classes, the summer courses also offer participants the opportunity to meet people from other countries with different cultural backgrounds. Many participants enjoy it so much here that they return a year later to study in Göttingen,” says Katharina Cherubim, summer course coordinator. Other participants immediately register for a second summer course. Lena Dolid, for example, is a 23-year-old tourism student from Khanty-Mansiysk, Russia, who took part in not just one but two IKK courses this year after participating in the summer course last year. The university’s international flair and the well-equipped library both make Göttingen an excellent location for summer courses. Nikolai Pobyvayev, 20, is a history student at Lomonosov Moscow State University who wants to research 19th century German-Russian relations for his dissertation while participating in the language courses.

About half of the participants receive scholarships, primarily from the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD). The International Office, known as Göttingen International, is also providing scholarships to eight students from China and Korea. Groups from partner university Seoul National University in South Korea as well as from Liaoning University in Shenyang, China are attending the courses for the first time this year.
