Göttingen University congratulates the biophysicist on receiving the highest distinction for scientific research

(pug) Göttingen University congratulates Professor Stefan W. Hell of the Max Planck Institute for Biophysical Chemistry on winning the 2014 Nobel Prize. University President Professor Ulrike Beisiegel commends his research findings, which are not only outstanding but also highly relevant in the life sciences: "I am delighted that his scientific hometown is right here on the Göttingen Campus and that he fosters cooperation between the Max Planck Institute and our University in the highest degree."

Stefan Hell has been an Honorary Professor at the Faculty of Physics since 2004 and also collaborates closely with the Faculty of Chemistry. He is involved in numerous research projects with researchers, scientists at the University and the University Medical Center Göttingen (UMG). For example, he is principal investigator at the Collaborative Research Centres (SFB) 755 "Nanoscale Photonic Imaging" and (SFB) 1002 "Modulatory Units in Heart Failure". Hell is board member of the Cluster of Excellence "Nanoscale Microscopy and Molecular Physiology of the Brain" (CNMPB) and one of its spokespersons.

"Alongside Stefan Hell's outstanding scientific achievements, he also distinguishes himself in my eyes by his notable commitment to fostering young researchers and scientists at our joint graduate schools", Professor Ulrike Beisiegel adds. Indeed, Stefan Hell is also very involved in the Georg August University School of Science (GAUSS), the umbrella organisation that bundles PhD degree programmes in the natural sciences. This organisation is also home to the Göttingen Graduate School for Neurosciences, Biophysics and Molecular Biosciences (GGNB) anchored in the Excellence Initiative, of which Stefan Hell is also a member.
