The Institute of Computer Science (IFI) in Goettingen was founded in November 2002. It is an institute of the Faculty of Mathematics and Computer Science. Its mission is research and teaching in core computer science. The institute makes a major contribution to the bachelor's and master's degree programmes in computer science and data science, especially in core computer science areas such as practical, theoretical and technical computer science. Its strengths in research and teaching lie in theoretical, applied and practical computer science. A particular focus is placed on communication systems, where several professorships and their research groups contribute different perspectives such as software engineering for communication systems, internet technologies, service engineering, multimedia and database topics. In cooperation with the Institute of Information Systems, the economic aspects of communication systems are explored in a joint research project on internet economics. There are also joint research projects with the two bioinformatics departments of University Medical Center Goettingen and the Faculty of Biology and Psychology, as well as with other applied computer science fields.
