Forest roads provide a large number of functions, which are essential for forest management. One of the most important services is the ensured possibility of transporting harvested wood as a regenerating resource, which can contribute to the achievement of the internationally set goals for limiting the negative effects of climate change. So, on one hand, forest roads could be a part of the solution, but on the other hand, they are also affected by climate change as, for example, the hydrological regime is already and will be further altered.
This is where the research project “KlarWeg” comes into play, whose goals are: to identify impacts of climate change on existing forest roads, to generate possible adaption strategies, to combine these with best practices into a construction and planning concept, and in this way to improve the overall water balance in woodlands. The findings will be made directly applicable for practitioners using different web-based tools.
