15 June 2023: Dialogue event on "Paths towards a colonial-critical city"
Dialogue event, 15 June 2023, 7 p.m., Altes Rathaus/Old Town Hall
Over the next 12 months, the “Stadtlabor – Wege zur kolonialkritischen Stadt” (Urban Lab – Paths to a Colonial-Critical City) will provide space for exchange and the collaborative exploration and development of paths to a colonial-critical city of Göttingen. The project aims to gather perspectives, network knowledge and shape commemoration. In addition to the reappraisal of local colonial history, we also want to make anti-colonial resistance and colonial continuities to the present more visible and invite all Göttingen inhabitants to get involved and participate.
For the kick-off, we have invited various experts to an event in the Old Town Hall on June 15, 2023, to talk about the possibilities and challenges of a culture of remembrance critical of colonialism. Participation is possible on site or online. The following experts will speak:
- Dr. Neekee Chaturvedi (University of Rajasthan, Jaipur/India; researcher on oral history and decolonization of museums).
- Tahir Della (Decolonize Berlin, Initiative of Black People in Germany and promoter for diasporic perspectives in development education in the Berlin promoter program)
- Israel Kaunatjike (OvaHerero Activist and educational consultant with a focus on German colonial history in German South West Africa)
- Inken Kautter (Head of the Department of Culture, City of Göttingen)
- Moderator: Sarah Böger (Network Göttingen Postcolonial & Coordinator of the Urban Lab).
Afterwards, we invite interested people to join us at the Stadtlabor at Wilhelmsplatz and exchange ideas over drinks, snacks & music.
Collection call
Through the joint search for objects, documents and other contemporary testimonies, we plan to build a participatory open archive in which we can collect and retell stories together that are currently lying in drawers in attics and basements. We are especially interested in historical traces and biographies of people from formerly colonized areas and in anti-colonial resistance in the past and present in Göttingen.
Do you have documents or objects, knowledge or hints you would like to share? Please write to sarah.boeger@uni-goettingen.de
