Project A1: Developmental interplay of curiosity, meta-cognition and social learning PRs: Hannes Rakoczy, Julia Fischer PhD: Marlene Meyer Project A1 will explore the developmental interplay between curiosity, meta-cognition and social learning. Specifically, the PhD researcher will devise studies to test the hypothesis that curiosity-driven learning is boosted in social and collaborative learning contexts relative to individual exploration situations. Although the work will primarily focus on human ontogeny, there will be the opportunity to carry out comparative work with non-human primates.

Project A2: Active acquisition of ecological and social information in wild macaques PRs: Oliver Schülke, Julia Ostner PhD: Kerne Rayner Project A2 will investigate factors that influence curiosity for ecological and social information in wild Assamese macaques. The PhD researcher will devise observational protocols to examine the social learning of foraging skills in a wild macaque population in Thailand (DPZ field site Phu Khieo). The data will be used to explore how curiosity for social information develops as individuals mature, and to explore the relationship between early life curiosity and proxies of evolutionary fitness.

Project A3: Predictors of curiosity in Guinea baboons PRs: Julia Fischer, Hannes Rakoczy PhD: Juliette-Anne Belot Project A3 will examine how early-life experience and environmental factors impact curiosity in a nonhuman primate, the Guinea baboon. The PhD researcher will design studies to investigate the information-seeking behaviour of wild Guinea baboons living near the DPZ field site Simenti in Senegal. The project will combine behavioural observations and field experimentation.

Project A4: To know or not to know – emotional, motivational and person-related factors of seeking or avoiding information PRs: Anne Schacht, Florentin Wörgötter PhD: Leon Behle Project A4 will investigate the factors influencing adult information-seeking behavior. The PhD researcher will design studies that explore individual-specific and content-specific factors, as well as any potential interactions between these factors that may mediate an individual’s tendency to seek or avoid information. The researcher will record participants’ judgements, collect physiological data, and utilize modelling techniques to accomplish the project’s objectives.
