Economic problems of silviculture (M.Sc.) (700261)

Description

In seminars and on the basis of practical examples in forestry operations, selected silvicultural topics are dealt with from an ecological and economic point of view: Selection and mixture of tree species, risks, mixed stand problems, comparison of clear-cutting and long-term regeneration methods, various forms of artificial stand establishment, various thinning methods, branching, promotion of arable reforestation, silvicultural concepts close to natural forests, tax treatment of forestry. The application of silvicultural methods for forest conversion into low-risk near-natural stands, the effects of climate change on forest management and the preservation of biodiversity in commercial forests are key topics.

Learning objectives and skills

Students will learn how to make decisions on the basis of ecological and economic knowledge and how to apply forest planning methods to the medium-term planning of forest development at stand, operational and landscape level, taking into account economic and ecological objectives and restrictions. Knowledge of silvicultural regeneration and maintenance methods and the growth processes of forest stands and individual trees are combined with the methods of economic analysis and evaluation.
