Silmultan G-2030

Herbs like Plantain or Birdsfoot trefoil as parts of pastures have been receiving increased interest lately. This is due to characteristics like a high drought restistance and a high potential to increase biodiversity of pastures. In addition to that, they show some interesting characteristics as forage plants for ruminants. For some species, a decreasing effect on enteral methane emissions, a high degree of ruminally undegradable protein (and in consequence a high efficiency of N use) or a high fermentation rate are discussed (the later is often regarded as being linked to high feed intake potential). In the project, different aspects of herbs as ruminant forage will be investigated. 15 different species of herbs are available in several accessions (varieties). The investigations on fermentative behaviour are done in an in vitro system (Hohenheim gas test).
Other working groups of the Simultan project are producing the herbs in different accessions and quantify their growing characteristics under varying growth conditions. These herbs represent the sample material for the investigations on the feeding value of herbs described here.
