Kurze Vorstellung

I'm a DAAD visiting professor and will be teaching three courses here this summer - all dealing with the intersections of folklore and ethnography. I'm excited to be introducing some of my ideas about place and performance, and queer folkloristics, as well as research tools for working with queer migration. This all overlaps with my ongoing ethnography of queer masculinities and queer underground economies in Cuba (begun in 2007). Following a brief visit to Göttingen in mid-March, I travelled to several cities in France, Switzerland, and Spain to reconnect with Cuban friends and start writing about their journeys to Europe. It has already been an amazing experience! Some of them will hopefully visit us in Göttingen, and take part in some of my classes.

I'm originally from Newfoundland, and I'm based at Memorial University of Newfoundland's Department of Folklore. I likewise work closely with gender studies and ethnomusicology. My husband, Leo (originally from Cuba), is also here with me this summer - and we are particularly interested in connecting with the local Latino and queer communities. I'm excited to meet and learn from everyone in the department. Please stop by to say hello!
