November 17, 2026 Save-the-date: Graduation Ceremony and the Faculty’s 45th Anniversary
On November 17, 2026, the Faculty of Social Sciences will hold a graduation ceremony for its graduates from the summer semester of 2025 and the winter semester of 2025/2026. In addition to a commemorative speech and the presentation of the Wolfgang Enke Award, awards will also be given for the best BA/MA thesis and the best doctoral dissertation. Furthermore, the Faculty will also celebrate its 45th anniversary on that day. Both events will take place in the Auditorium on Wilhelmsplatz. Further information, particularly the program schedule, will follow in due course.

What makes for good teaching?
The Good Practice Teaching Examples for the 2025/26 winter semester provide a variety of answers to this question. The award-winning courses exemplify innovative teaching concepts, strong commitment, and the breadth of teaching at the Faculty of Social Sciences. They offer insights into different approaches to good teaching and highlight what makes them particularly successful. Courses that received particularly positive ratings in the teaching evaluation are selected. The Good Practice teaching examples promote the exchange of ideas about successful teaching concepts and demonstrate the diversity with which excellent teaching is practiced at the faculty.

Funding Success: New Research Training Group Established
Prof. Dr. Anja Jetschke is the spokesperson for the Research Training Group “China’s Geo-Economic Rise and the Construction of Structural Power” (China-GRASP), which has been approved for funding by the DFG. The project is carried out jointly with colleagues from the Faculty of Economics and the Faculty of Humanities—in collaboration with the Kiel Institute for the World Economy—and offers doctoral students the opportunity to pursue their doctorates within a structured research and training program.

The University of Göttingen has summarized its understanding of good teaching in a mission statement for teaching and learning. This mission statement was developed in a broad, university-wide, participatory process involving teachers, students, and members of the academic administration.

Research funding
The faculty subsidizes applications for funding for doctoral studies and the post-doctoral phase, as well as applications for funding for internationalization. The Research Commission decides on the applications received.

Dissertation defense and habilitation dates
Approximately 10 students complete their doctorates at the Faculty of Social Sciences each year, and 1-2 people obtain their habilitation. The dates of public university disputations and lectures can be found here.
