Traineeship for Outgoing Students - Erasmus+ (KA131)

First clarify the following questions for yourself:

  • Is it a voluntary or a compulsory internship abroad?
  • Is my project supported by my faculty/seminar?
  • Do I have at least 60 days for an internship abroad? And when is a suitable period?
  • When do I want to do an internship: during my studies or after I have exmatriculated?

Your contact person for the recognition of work placements or your Erasmus+ Departmental Coordinator in the faculty/seminar will be happy to answer these questions. Teacher training students can also obtain information from the Office of the Dean of Teacher Education.

Industry - Company - Experience and knowledge:

  • In which industry/area of work do I want to gain experience?
  • Which additional experiences and skills are important for an internship abroad? What should I learn in advance?
  • What should I consider for a successful application in my target country?
  • Which company or organisation can offer me an eligible internship?

Foreign language skills:

  • What language skills do I need? What level should I have mastered by the time I start my internship?

Find out in good time at the Zentralen Einrichtung für Sprachen und Schlüsselqualifikationen (ZESS) and take advantage of the wide range of language courses and language certificates on offer.

Funding is generally possible from the first semester of Higher Education. However, if you are planning an internship abroad in your first year of study, you should already have some professional experience and be able to provide evidence of this.

In principle, applications are possible on a continuous basis and can be submitted by the following deadlines of the year:

  • 15 January: Start of internship as of 15 April
  • 15 March: start of internship as of 15 June
  • 15 May: start of internship as of 15 August
  • 15 July: start of internship as of 15 October
  • 15 September: Start of internship as of 15 December
  • 15 November: Start of internship as of 15 February
  • An application for a traineeship that starts later than three months after the application date is possible in principle, e.g. an application for a traineeship that is to start on 01 August can be submitted as early as 15 January.

The evaluation of the applications and the feedback on the evaluation will be sent to the applicants by e-mail as soon as possible after the above-mentioned deadlines.

Register with your @stud.uni-goettingen.de address in the Erasmus+ KA 131 Portal and open the corresponding application form. Students who already created access to the mobility portal for a previous mobility, please use these login data.

With the online form, you must submit the following application documents:

  • Confirmation from the host organisation stating the first and last day of work and the area of assignment (optional template for a (Placement Offer).
  • Proof of sufficient language skills (see Calls; note for students of modern philologies or English-taught programs: Please upload the admission or a certificate of matriculation)
  • Enrollment certificate
  • If applicable, proof of already existing Erasmus+ funding during the current study cycle (e.g. Certificate of Stay)

You are also welcome to use our Tips for a successful Application.

After successful review by the Göttingen International Department (see "When are the application deadlines?"), we ask you to submit a complete Learning Agreement for Traineeship via the Erasmus+ KA 131 Portal by 6 weeks before the start of the internship. Please see our Notes on the Learning Agreement for Traineeships (German only).

The call for applications contains all relevant information on the general funding and application requirements and should definitely be read before applying. The overview of the funding rates provides information on the respective funding conditions. Please note that the period of stay does not necessarily coincide with the funding period. Information on closed calls can be found here.

Erasmus+ funding is not full funding, but a mobility grant. The programme countries are divided into three country groups with corresponding funding rates (high, medium, low cost of living):

# Country Group Group Rate per financially supported Month (100%)
1 Country group 1 (high cost of living) incl. Top up for Traineeships in the amount of 150 euros Denmark, Finland, Ireland, Iceland, Liechtenstein, Luxembourg, Norway, Sweden 750 Euro
2 Country group 2 (medium cost of living) incl. Top up for Traineeships in the amount of 150 euros Austria, Belgium, Cyprus, France, Greece, Italy, Malta, Netherlands, Portugal, Spain 690 Euro
3 Country group 3 (low cost of living) incl. Top up for Traineeships in the amount of 150 euros Bulgaria, Croatia, Czech Republic, Estonia, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, North Macedonia, Poland, Romania, Serbia, Slovakia, Slovenia, Turkey 640 Euro

The availability of funds is fundamentally dependent on the project funds (third-party funds) as well as

  • the number of successful applications,
  • the destination countries (country categories) and the length of stay as well as
  • the number of top up amounts granted (Social Top up, Green Travel).

Erasmus+ KA 131 Traineeship Funding: Call 2023

Only full months are supported. A full month corresponds to 30 days in the programme. Days that are not funded are zero grant days. The minimum funding period for an Erasmus+ traineeship is 2 months (60 days) and the maximum funding period is limited to a maximum of 10 months (300 days).

  • The grant agreement contains the maximum funding amount for the period of stay from the first to the last working day. The basis for calculation is the planned period of stay. Only full months are funded (1 month = 30 days).
  • If the host institution provides financial support and/or a contribution in kind of e.g. housing, food, and transportation of more than 1,200€/net per month, the entire stay will be supported as a zero grant mobility.
  • If applied for in due time, a Social Top up will be granted. The social top up of 250 euros will be granted for the financially supported months. If more than one social top up is applicable, only one can be approved. The binding application must be submitted online within 5 working days of being requested. The form link will be sent by email. Late applications will not be accepted.
  • If the outward and return journey is sustainable, a Top up for Green Travel can be applied for. The binding application must be submitted online within 5 working days of being requested. The form link will be sent by email. Late applications will not be accepted.
  • The actual period of stay is confirmed by the host organisation at the end of the stay by means of the Traineeship Certificate.
  • Disbursement of the grant: Call 2023

The financial support is paid out in two instalments (75% / 25%). 75% of the maximum funding amount will be paid out at the beginning of the stay if

    • the complete Learning Agreement for Traineeship has been signed (4 signatures),
    • the funding agreement and annexes have been signed by both parties,
    • the mandatory OLS language test (see also website) has been carried out,
    • enrolment for the funded semester is available (if applicable, via upload in the Erasmus+ KA 131 portal) and
    • the confirmation of arrival from the receiving organisation has been uploaded to the Erasmus+ KA 131 portal of Universiy of Göttingen as a PDF document (no later than 5 calendar days after the start of the academic stay).

You will receive the remaining 25 % of the maximum funding amount at the end of your stay if, no later than 6 weeks after the end of the internship,

    • the Traineeship Certificate (or a qualifying internship certificate) has been uploaded to the Erasmus+ KA 131 portal and
    • the EU survey was carried out and the experience report (Erasmus+ KA 131 portal) was submitted online.

In case of non-compliance with the deadlines and/or submission of the mandatory documents, the Göttingen International Office reserves the right to reclaim any funding already paid.

    Changes of Stay

Please inform Göttingen International immediately of any changes concerning your stay.

    • Changes to the planned start or end date must be reported immediately to erasmus[at]@uni-goettingen.de.
    • If you are unable to start your stay, complete and submit the form Erasmus+ KA 131 Student Mobility - Cancellation or termination of a mobility in the mobility portal.
    • Please complete the form Erasmus+ KA 131 Student Mobility - Cancellation or termination of a mobility in the mobility portal immediately if you have to terminate a mobility that has already started. We will contact you to discuss the processing of your funding. We will also be avaibale for an individual talk.
    • An extension of a funded internship is possible if the changes are reported online up to 30 days (binding deadline) before the originally planned end date. The "Learning Agreement for Traineeships - Changes during the internship" (template see below) must be submitted with the form. To access the online form, please contact the Erasmus+ KA 131 team in good time. Notification of the extension by e-mail only will not be accepted. An adjustment of the funding agreement will be reviewed and depends on the availability of funds. Please note that a new Learning Agreement for Traineeships must be submitted for extensions beyond 6 months. In this case, please use the template you received during the application process. An extension of the funding beyond 10 months (300 days) is not possible.

Participants must confirm that they have health insurance as well as accident and liability insurance at the workplace when signing the funding commitment. If the host institution does not offer insurance cover, this insurance must be taken out independently. In addition, accident and liability insurance for leisure time as well as health insurance abroad (incl. coverage of repatriation costs) are strongly recommended.

Students with statutory insurance who are planning a voluntary internship with pay should contact their health insurance provider early on.

It is recommended to take care of sufficient insurance cover at an early stage.

  • Erasmus+ Key Action 131 beneficiaries must take part in a compulsory online language assessment. This so-called "Online Language Support" (OLS) offers Erasmus+ beneficiaries various possibilities: Self-assessment of language skills through language tests and participation in language courses in any number of languages.
  • The assessment does not replace the language certificate to be submitted.
  • After receiving an Erasmus+ Grant Agreement, Göttingen International or the EU Academy will inform you if you have to complete an online language assessment. Native speakers are exempt from the compulsory test.
  • Participants of the calls 2022 and 2023 please note: The implementation of the new EU database eu|academy for the mandatory language assessment (so-called "OLS" - Online Language Support) is delayed. Against this background, Erasmus+ grantees will be exempted from the mandatory OLS assessment. However, we would welcome you to take the OLS assessment voluntarily. You will be notified by email as soon as the OLS function is fully ready. Independently of this, you are welcome to use the "eu|academy" on a voluntary basis. In addition to the virtual language tests and courses, self-study courses on other topics such as "migration & integration" or "cities, urban & regional development" are also offered.
